Apple just released a design guide for third party developers in order to help them to make the best from the iPhone.

iPhone design guide

Best practices include:

  • Understanding that multitouch does not equal to a mouse
  • Safari body is clipped to the iPhone screen
  • Safari supports those standards: HTML 4.01, XHTML 1.0, CSS 2.1 and partial CSS 3.xx, JavaScript 1.4 -- including DOM support, AJAX technologies -- including XMLHTTPRequest.
  • Use of specific phone features such as:
    • link to call a number: <a href="tel:1-408-555-5555">1-408-555-5555</a>
    • link to google map: <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=cupertino">Cupertino</a>
  • How to detect iPhone browser with the following User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU like Mac OS X; en) AppleWebKit/420+ (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/3.0 Mobile/1A543a Safari/419.3
  • Specify an iPhone-only CSS with: <link media="only screen and (max-device-width: 480px)" href="iPhone.css" type="text/css" rel="stylesheet" />
  • and more...

Here at boursomac.com, we currently are designing a specific version of the site for iPhone, so be patient...
